Almost eight years ago my dear horse Jade died, only a few months after I had to sell my two ponies. After a life full of horses, suddenly there was silence and grief. Those who know me have always known how much I missed having my own horses, but as my kids were young, my business was growing, and I lived far from places where horses could live, I chose to put that desire away.
Until now. Over the last months I first found the perfect location. A pasture I had known for years, and the dear friend whom I asked knew the owner. There was one available spot, which I reserved right away.
For months I have been looking for my perfect horse. I have seen many, but they were not the match I was looking for.
Until I saw this Irish white horse. I had a feeling this was him. But other people came first. I sent his owner a long message why I thought I was the right human for him. She told me that if the others were no match, I could come meet him.
He didn’t like the people. He sent them out of the pasture with bare teeth, and I was invited. We got along. I was amused by the strong character. He looks so much like my Jade – but different, and white.
Then I heard his name: Thorwald. The forest of Thor. Thor, the protector.
I visited three times, liking him more every time. The vet did a health check and gave green light. Today we picked him up and brought him to his new home. Six acres of forest pasture not too far from my home, with three buddies. It was a warm welcome. I watched them for hours, until we were all tired, and I sat with Thorwald as he was eating. One of my favorite things in the world: sitting with a horse that is eating hay.
I’ve never seen a horse so grounded and respectful in a new location, with new horses. He has a wisdom inside him that makes me curious to get to know him more. He has strong opinions, is immensely strong, and will tell you his boundaries. I can’t wait to learn together with him, and go on adventures in the forest!
